Andhra Fish Curry, Nellore Fish Curry, Spicy Chepala Pulusu
Ingredients:
  • Fish – 500 Gms, cut into medium pieces
  • Onion, medium sized – 1 Nos, chopped
  • Tomato, medium sized – 2 Nos, chopped
  • Green chillies – 2-3 Nos, slit
  • Garlic paste – ½ Tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder – ½ Teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder – ½ Tablespoon
  • Coriander powder – 1 Tablespoon
  • Cumin powder – ½ Teaspoon
  • Pepper powder – ½ Teaspoon
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Fenugreek Seeds - ¼ Teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 2-3 sprig
  • Gingelly Oil or Vegetable oil – ½ cup
  • Chopped Coriander leaves - 1-2 Tablespoon, optional
  • Salt to taste

For Marination:

  • Garlic paste - ¼ Tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder – ½ Teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder – ½ Tablespoon
  • Coriander powder – 1 Tablespoon
  • Cumin powder – ½ Teaspoon
  • Pepper powder – ½ Teaspoon
  • Salt - ½ Teaspoon

For Tamarind water:

  • Tamarind - 1 small lemon sized
  • Warm water – 2 cup
Instructions:

Initial Preparation:

  1. Clean and wash the fish pieces. Drain the water completely and set aside.
  2. Soak tamarind in warm water for at-least 20 minutes. Then extract juice and set aside. Discard the pulp.
  3. In a bowl add in the fish pieces and the ingredients mentioned in 'For marination'. Mix well and set aside for 30 minutes.

Curry Preparation:

  1. Heat oil into a heavy bottomed pan, splutter mustard seeds.
  2. Add in the cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and saute for 30 seconds on low heat.
  3. Add in the curry leaves and fry for few seconds.
  4. Add in the chopped onions, green chillies, garlic paste and saute till the onions are soft.
  5. Add in the chopped tomatoes and saute until the tomatoes are mushy.
  6. Add in the turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, pepper powder and saute until the raw smell disappears on low heat.
  7. Add in the extracted tamarind juice and salt. Adjust the quantity of tamarind juice according to the sourness.
  8. Add water, if needed. Mix well. Cover and let it boil for 5 minutes.
  9. Add in the marinated fish pieces and mix well. Cover and cook until the fish pieces are cooked well on low-medium heat. Adjust salt.
  10. Remove form heat, sprinkle coriander leaves if using. Cover and let it sit for at-least 1 hour.
  11. Serve with hot rice.
